everybody has different insurance needs and questions

We’ve answered some of the more common questions we get asked

Real customers with real questions

If there’s one thing we’ve learned about the insurance industry and working with people... communication is essential! Communicate often and clearly. So, we’ve compiled some of the questions we’ve received over the years, and shared the answers with you, in the name of communication!

  1. I have some expensive jewellery at home. How can I make sure it's protected?

Standard homeowners, condominium or renters insurance policies include a limited amount of coverage for jewellery and other valuable items. However, many policies limit the dollar amount of coverage for the theft or loss due to a covered peril of such items. To properly protect certain types of valuables, additional coverage is available through a policy endorsement or floater.

  2. I'm looking at buying a car. Is there a difference in insurance based on the vehicle I choose?

Auto premiums rates vary based on a variety of factors, which include:

    • Type of vehicle (size and performance) –Larger cars tend to be less expensive to insure than smaller cars because they typically suffer less damage in an accident. High-performance vehicles, such as sports cars, tend to be more expensive to insure since they are statistically driven more aggressively. As a result, they tend to be involved in accidents more frequently.

    • Value of vehicle – the more expensive the car, the more it will cost to insure.

    • Age of vehicle – the newer the vehicle, the more it costs to insure.

    • Vehicle usage – Typically the cost is based on the average amount of kilometres the automobile is driven; the higher the mileage, the higher the premium.

  3. Does my policy cover me for driving a rental vehicle (in town or in another country) – or do I have to purchase additional insurance?

Before you rent an auto, contact D.I.S. Financial Group to find out how much collision and liability coverage you have on your vehicle. In most cases, the coverage and deductibles you have on your personal automobile insurance policy would apply to a rental car, providing it is used for pleasure and not business.

If you don't have comprehensive and collision coverage on your own car, you will not be covered if your rental car is stolen or if it is damaged in an accident. If you plan to rent a vehicle frequently, your best bet is to purchase a non-owner auto liability Insurance policy from D.I.S. Financial Group.

  4. Is my boat covered by my home insurance?

Theft to watercraft, including furnishings, equipment and outboard motors is typically excluded if the theft occurs outside your residential premises. To cover your boat and its accessories, you need a separate boatowners insurance policy.
