Market season is here!

Farmers Market Sign

One sure way you can tell warm weather is around the corner, is the opening of local farmers’ markets. Cold and bleak parking lots give birth to an oasis of fresh fruit and vegetables. Red! Orange! Green! Oh, the green. As Canadians, we emerge from winter starved for bright colours in our natural environment – and as residents of Durham Region, our landscape does not disappoint. Our proximity to green space is literally around the corner. It’s so close, it spills into our urban centres. Farmers’ markets are not only a great source for making you feel all warm and fuzzy with those summer vibes, but they’re excellent sources for us to access the ‘fruits’ of small business.

Supporting local business is just one of the things we take seriously here at D.I.S. Financial Group. Studies show that about 49 per cent of startups in Canada fail within the first five years. Many times this is because of improper planning, lack of business knowledge, failure to conduct market research or simply setting unrealistic expectations. The good news is that many new businesses do become successful and profitable.

You can help local small business by visiting farmers’ markets, shopping at boutique clothing stores and eating at family-run restaurants.
