There was an increase in the number of property claims reported this past weekend, as a result of heavy rainfall across Ontario. The following is a short list of frequently asked questions when it comes to water damage:

What should I do if there is an imminent threat of overland flooding?

If overland flooding is iminent, shut off electricity to areas of the home that may be affected. If possible, use sand bags, install flood shields or built-up barriers for basement windows and doors.

NOTE: In iminent flooding situations, your safety is paramount and all evacuation orders and other official instructions should be followed.

What should I do if I have a claim?

You can call your D.I.S. Financial Group insurance broker at 905-666-2090, or for 24/7 Claims Service, you can call the number listed below for your insurer.

Intact Insurance – 1-866-464-2424
GORE Mutual Insurance – 1-800-265-8600
Chubb Insurance – 1-800-532-4822

Please try to mitigate as much damage as possible if it can be done safely, prior to the arrival of an adjuster or contractor.

When will I hear from a contractor?

Contractors are calling customers as soon as possible to set up an appointment. Your insurer can provide you with the contractor’s phone number, in case they need to share something urgent.

How do I dispose of debris?

It depends on what you are disposing of. Some debris can be thrown out, other materials may require special pick up, which could be arranged by the municipality if a large area has been impacted. You should check with your municipality for these types of notices.

NOTE: Make a list and take pictures of everything that is damaged or thrown away (ie. building samples such as flooring).

I want to know what is covered before authorizing repairs.

The adjusters are working as quickly as possible and cannot confirm coverage over the phone. Remember – you can mitigate the damage. If the loss is not covered, it will be your responsibility to repair the damages. There could be coverage limitations for additional damage.

What if I have to leave my home?

We are here to provide extra assistance – as is your insurance company. Intact will pay any necessary and reasonable living expenses while access to your dwelling is uninhabitable and until you can return home safely. The deductible on your policy will apply.

You will need to keep all receipts as a result of this event an provide them to your adjuster, who will require the receipts to evaluate the claim.

Did You Know?

The primary reason your basement and home can flood during a rainstorm is due to poor or blocked drainage.  Clean the gutters and the drainage downspouts attached to your roof at least twice a year.
